1. Jack Del Rio must take responsibility for the team’s mediocrity (assuming he keeps his job). Just one time, I want to see JDR address the media and fans to accept responsibility for a disappointing season. As head coach, the buck stops with him. Show us that it matters. Tell the fans you’re frustrated, too; tell us that you’re not going to let it happen again. Hell - recite Tebow’s The Promise speech; just give us something that shows you’re not in this solely for the $5M a year. You’re gonna get a huge payout whether you’re coach of the Jags or not - so please put the ego aside and admit you will do a better job. Acknowledge the mistake or shortcomings, apologize, tell us how you’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again and get back to work. PR 101.
2. Engage minorities in your marketing and outreach efforts. I’m not just talking about skin color. I’m talking about gender, age, sexual orientation, occupation, etc. Guess who usually controls the purse strings in the household? The wife and/or mother. Show her what a great family event games are. My kids have been attending since they were 3 months old. That’s right - 3 months. It’s a part of who they are, and they look forward to every single game - home or away. Please don’t dismiss non-traditional football fans…or you’ll miss out on lots of passionate folks with disposable income. Diversity. Diversity. Diversity.
3. Engage the North Florida/South Georgia community Tallahassee to Orlando to Daytona to Savannah. Do a road show with a few top tier players and meet with the local Chambers of Commerce, Visitor’s Centers, community leaders, etc. Make the business case for the NFL in our area. Demonstrate value. If folks travel every other Saturday to Orlando for UCF or Tally for FSU, there’s NO reason folks in those cities couldn’t come to Jax. Maybe not every game, but certainly for high profile opponents/players.
4. See number 1.
These suggestions come from the heart. I attended Colt Fever as a child, and dreamed of the day Jacksonville would be an NFL city. It is indeed a privilege to have an NFL team, and I am certain that the loss of the Jaguars would be monumentally detrimental to our community. I’m able and ready to do my part to support the Jaguars, including renewing my season tickets for the 16th season, and I’d like to see the team and community think and act strategically as they rebuild the team and fan base. We are Jaguars!
